Outreach – WA obstetrics initiative

Expression of Interest

ASUM Outreach has been established to be a charity whose public charitable purpose is to advance health through assisting in furthering the objects of Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine. Specifically, the Company’s principal activity and purpose will be the promotion, prevention and control of diseases in people through advancing the clinical use of medical diagnostic ultrasound primarily in rural and remote regions of Australia, and international communities including New Zealand as the directors may see fit, to improve patient health and care in disadvantaged and low socio-economic communities.

ASUM Outreach is currently supporting an initiative from Mercy Hands, the health care program of Water for Africa. Water for Africa is an Australian Not-For-Profit organisation bringing hope to communities in Tanzania and Uganda. In 2019 through Water for Africa 605,348 people received clean drinking water across Tanzania and Uganda. Since the beginning of Water for Africa over 2.2 million people have been impacted by clean water. Mercy Hands sends teams of Australian Midwives and Nurses to partner with the local government Mafinga Hospital in South Tanzania and reach surrounding communities.

The Australian Midwives and Nurse volunteers are experienced health professionals who are passionate about meeting substantial needs of the people in remote rural Tanzania. The Tanzanian people of the Iringa region have limited access to obstetric services and minimal or no access to antenatal ultrasound. The risks related to childbirth to mother and babies are substantial for Tanzanian remote rural communities.

The aim of the ultrasound project is to improve birth outcomes for mother and babies. As part of this effort, ASUM Outreach is supporting point-of-care ultrasound training for the three midwives volunteering in Tanzania to further support the aim of this project and enhance the training provided in Tanzania.

Mercy Hands has raised funds for a portable ultrasound system and now we are calling for help in training the midwives.

With the current complication of COVID-19, we are calling for volunteers to support obstetric ultrasound training of the three midwives. The training will be based in Perth.

ASUM members who wish to volunteer are invited to submit an expression of interest to support this training and outreach initiative.
