We had a tremendous conference this year with local and international speakers covering a range of interesting topics. The conference also included a variety of hands-on workshops ranging from Emergency ’50 shades of grey’ to Midwives 1st/2nd/3rd trimester scanning. Adelaide hosted a DMU Examiners’ Course on 15th August. The course covered current DMU examiner requirements and attendees received an overview of the GDMU course about to be assessed as an RTO approved course.
Adelaide will host a Vascular & Cardiac workshop in early 2016. We’re currently finalising the date, but keep a look-out in your email – it’a a workshop you won’t want to miss if you’re in one of these specialties.
Brisbane DMU Examiners’ Course was held on 1st August and was very well attended. There is a lot of interest in our RTO application and the GDMU. More information on both will become available – read about it in coming RealTime issues.
Brisbane/Gold Coast will host another Sonographer Supervisor Course on 17th October so if you missed the first one or want a refresher register now! This course is continually being updated and will provide you with many tools to improve your supervision skills. Registration is open – members can log in and register online.
Canberra will hold a Vascular Workshop presented by specialist sonographer James Gotting on 17th October. James will be joined by vascular surgeon A/Prof. Stephen Bradshaw. They’ll present on a range of topics covering Aortic and Arterial Ultrasound as well as Deep Vein Thrombosis Management. Registration is open – members can log in and register online.
Cooma hosted an O&G Workshop and a concurrent Point of Care Emergency workshop on 1st August. There was live scanning and plenty of opportunity to ask questions, learn the hows and whys from experts and was well attended by ACRRM and RACGP practitioners.
Melbourne hosted its 1st Sonographer Supervisor Course on 25th July. Presented by educationalists Delwyn Nicholls and Annie Gibbins this course was worth every minute of the 6 hours spent learning the tools to improve supervisors’ communication and teaching skills. We’ve already had requests for a 2nd course to be run soon!
Everyone enjoyed the day and were enthusiastic about putting their many newly learned skills into practice. Feedback received included: ‘Excellent course. Great insights into teaching’, ‘I thought it was all helpful, Thank you’, ‘I think the course was very comprehensive’, ‘It should be longer, there’s so much information here that is really useful. Thank you for a most informative day”.
Melbourne’s DMU Examiners’ Course planned for 29th August was postponed. Our apologies to the interested examiners – we will be rescheduling a date in 2016.
Melbournians will have the opportunity to attend a number of events next year ranging from Examiners’ Courses to Vascular workshops. We’ve heard you ask for a lot more of our professional educational workshops and are currently planning dates and speakers so watch this space!
Newcastle Vascular Workshop was held on 15th August where guru James Gotting presented along with local vascular sonographers Adam Tolfree and Kate Harrison. The event was well attended and reading the feedback, was enjoyed by all.
Newcastle will host a Paediatrics Workshop on 10th October. Sydney paediatric sonographer Lorna Hardiman, supported by local Greg O’Connor and Radiologist Dr Christopher Wong, will cover a variety of topics including emergency paediatric abdominal ultrasound and conduct a live scanning session on an infant. There’s no limit to learning so register now for this 5.5 hour workshop. Registration is open – members can log in and register online.

Sydney hosted a Maternal Fetal Medicine: Recent advances in 1st trimester screening workshop on Saturday 22nd August. Presented by ASUM Councillor A/Prof Fabricio Da Silva Costa, Dr Andrew McLennan and Dr Fergus Scott this extensive and exhaustive event exposed registrants to the knowledge and expertise of world-renowned fetal medicine experts who guided them through cutting-edge research updates and disseminated clinical guidance.
Sydney was host to this years’ ASUM 2015 Annual Scientific Meeting on 11-13 September. The Pre-Conference Interactive Program: Doppler in Fetal Medicine Obstetric Ultrasound was held on Thursday 10 September where delegates were treated to a terrific line-up of world renowned Keynote Speakers Prof Christoph Lees, Prof Aris Papageorghiou, A/Prof Fabricio Da Silva Costa and A/Prof George Condous.
The Scientific Program had something for everyone and many specialties had live scanning workshops that were thoroughly enjoyed by ultrasound practitioners from many countries around the world.
Sydney will host a 6-hour Paediatric Workshop on 14 November that will cover emergency paediatric acute abdomen, paediatric chest, tips for emergency physicians including case studies from the emergency department at Westmead Children’s Hospital. If you’re involved in paediatric care you won’t want to miss this terrific line-up of topics and presenters. We have applied tor ACRRM and RACGP for approval of an emergency procedural grant. Perth Paediatric Workshop was held on 19th September and was presented by Sydney sonographer Lorna Hardiman and local Radiologist Dr Bradley Wood. Attendees enjoyed the live scanning presentation and learned a number of helpful tips and tricks when scanning a wriggly infant.
Perth will hold an O&G Workshop on 24th October presented by Dr Fergus Scott and supported by local specialists Dr Anjana Thottungal and Dr Glen Lo. Topics include: Micro-array versus karyotype for prenatal diagnosis, NIPT v Nuchal Translucency and Adrenal Masses, amongst others. If you’re in O&G you will not want to miss this event. Perth Vascular Workshop will be held on 7th November and is presented by Adelaide sonographer James Gotting, who will present on Renal Access, Arterial Ultrasound, Lower limb incompetence and Aortic Ultrasound. Perth Midwives Introduction to Ultrasound workshop will be held on 5th February 2016 where all midwives interested in participating will learn about ASUM’s CAHPU Course for Midwives, receive a basic physics intro to ultrasound, learn about 3rd trimester fetal position and scanning in 3rd trimester. Details for interested registrants will be emailed out shortly and will also be included in the ACM newsletter.
Perth Sonographer Supervisor Course (Round 2) will be held on 6th February 2016 presented by ASUM Sonographer of the Year, Delwyn Nicholls, and ASUM President, A/Prof Susan Campbell Westerway. Even if you previously attended the 4.5 hour workshop over a year ago you’ll still learn tonnes of stuff this time around. The course now incorporates so much more information it needs 6.5 hours to cover the extensive range of skills you can learn. Registration is open – members can log in and register online.
