ASUM Obituary – Past President Dr Beverley Barraclough

It is with great sadness that we notify our members of the passing of Beverley Barraclough on the 26 April 2019. Beverley was President of ASUM in 1991-92 and was one of the pioneers in developing diagnostic ultrasound services in Australia.

Bev was a founding partner in one of the first diagnostic Ultrasound practices outside of a hospital in 1975. She was Director of the Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound at Hornsby and Ku-ring-gai Hospital for many years and with Richard Picker and their team, established and then directed the Department of Diagnostic Ultrasound and Foetal Medicine at the Sydney Adventist hospital. Bev was a visiting specialist at Dubbo Base Hospital, Dubbo Diagnostic Centre, North Shore Private Hospital and managing partner of the practices at St Leonards and Hornsby.

Bev was President of her specialty society, the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine in 1991 -1992. Her contributions to ultrasound were highly significant whether it was working with Tom Reeve, Jack Jellins, George Kossoff and others at the Ultrasonic Institute helping to further develop the ultrasound society, leading the design and implementation of education programs and qualifications in ultrasound  for sonographers and doctors, or managing her practices and being an effective partner with Dr. Richard Picker over so many years in providing great care to the thousands of patients who were referred to them seeking reassurance and support, whatever the diagnosis.

Beverley loved all aspects of her work, particularly her patients and particularly those with high risk pregnancies, was fascinated by new discoveries and new ways of doing things, was a great contributor to her specialty, the hospitals she worked in and indeed in the wider world.
