An exciting opportunity is currently available for Radiographer Sonographers or Sonographers with a high level of clinical experience to join our great team in the Medical Imaging Department of Townsville University Hospital on a permanent basis.

Key duties

  • Deliver high level ultrasound clinical services across a broad range of ultrasound examinations with some clinical supervision.
  • Provide clinical direction and advice on ultrasound to health practitioners in all aspects relating to their area of expertise.
  • Apply professional judgment to complex cases through pathology recognition, diagnosis and the production of a Sonographer’s report.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively within a team in both the medical imaging department and acute hospital environment.
  • Effectively liaise with patients, other health professionals and supervisors in both routine and emergency situations.

Role requirements

  • Mandatory: Qualifications recognised by Australian Sonographer Accredited Register (ASAR). Post Graduate Qualification in Ultrasound or an appropriate Degree or Diploma in Sonography (e.g. Diploma/Bachelor of Applied Science) from a recognised tertiary institution.
  • Accredited with Australian Sonographer’s Accreditation Registry (ASAR).
  • Evidence of significant professional development activities.
  • If a Radiographer, the applicant must hold a tertiary qualification in a Medical Imaging profession, hold current registration with MRPBA (APHRA)and a current Queensland Radiation Use License.
  • Drivers Licence: This position requires the incumbent to operate a class C motor vehicle and an appropriate license endorsement to operate this vehicle is required.
  • Rostered Hours: The successful candidate to this position may be required to participate in shift work and will be required to participate in weekend and on-call roster as well as work on public holidays. This position may have a roster allocation to any facility within the THHS.
  • It is a mandatory condition of employment for the employee to be and remain vaccinated against COVID-19.

The Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) is seeking to fill a new role for the organisation of a Policy and Standards Officer. This role is part-time with workdays and time offering great flexibility for the right candidate.

Policy and Standards officer will look at policy, standards and advocacy work for the ultrasound profession.

ASUM organisational structure

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) manages the ASUM secretariat which is made up of the: education, operations (including IT and finance), education, scientific publications, standards of practice, membership and events/conference.

Policy and Standards Officer responsibilities

The Policy and Standards Officer is responsible for undertaking a range of duties including but not limited to:


  • Develop and regularly review the process required for Standards of Practice guidelines. Process/policy to be approved by the CEO and ASUM Board of Directors.
  • Develop and regularly review the Terms of Reference for the Standards of Practice committee. Terms of Reference to be approved by the CEO and ASUM Board of Directors.


Committee support

  • Provide secretariat support to the Policy and Standards Chair to organize teleconferences and meetings. Generate and disseminate agendas and meeting minutes
  • Provide support to the committee responding in a timely fashion to committee member requests and seek the input from individual committee on Policies and Standards
  • Work with the committee to ensure expertise is well documented and drafted in accordance with expertise offered from the committee

Review of Policy and Statements

  • Develop, implement and maintain a review process ensuring that all deadlines are strictly adhered to
  • Draft new policies and statements where directed, facilitate the review process and submit to the CEO for ASUM Board of Directors approval
  • Research and provide evidence-based findings to support the Standards of Practice as guided by the committee
  • Ensure that any approved policies and statements are uploaded onto the relevant section on the ASUM website
  • Work with AJUM Editor-in-Chief to publish any new or reviewed Standards of Practice for peer review in the ASUM journal

The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate:

Working hours, salary and benefits

This is a part-time 0.6 full time equivalent role (FTE). Normal business hours between 8:30am to 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

It will sometimes be necessary to work during the evening, on public holidays or on weekends. When work is authorised out-of-hours, reimbursement will be by time-in-lieu on an hour for hour basis. When work is authorised on weekends or public holidays, reimbursement will be by time-in-lieu on a day-for-day basis.

Salary is approximately $30,000-$35,000 (depending on skills and experience) inclusive of 10% superannuation based on 0.4 FTE (i.e. $83,000-$90,000 FTE equivalent).

  • Collaborating with the Reporting Coordinator in assisting with re-organising the rostering of sonographer team to best meet the needs of the business
