Call for Expression of Interest from ASUM Members for Euroson 2010 Copenhagen

As a result of the CADUCEUS relationship between ASUM and DUDS (Denmark), expressions of interest are invited from ASUM members as speakers for the Euroson 2010 Copenhagen Congress from 21 – 25 August 2010.

The names will be submitted by ASUM and it will be up to the Euroson Organising Committee to make the decisions based on session availability and the relevance in the program. We are looking at possibly 2 additional ASUM members to be part of this ASUM delegation.

If accepted, the level of support is limited to complimentary registration, invitations to social events and some accommodation support. All other expenses, including travel, will be at the invitee’s personal cost. The benefits of being accepted, other than the prestige of being an invited overseas speaker, include networking and peer connection, sharing and exchanging knowledge and ideas, giving something back to the ultrasound profession as a speaker, opportunities to be profiled in a European Congress, and may open doors locally and internationally for professional and career advancement in the future.

Please email your interest to the ASUM CEO carolinehong@asum.com.au with the following details:

  • a)       A short biography and a full CV
  • b)       Titles of 4-6 topics
  • c)       Past local or international speaking experience

Department of Health and Ageing – Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme for Practices providing services under Medicare
The scheme is being implemented in stages to ensure practices are introduced to accreditation requirements incrementally. The first stage of the scheme is due to conclude on 30 June 2010. On 1 July 2010, the next phase of the scheme must commence. All members of ASUM are advised about the update on the development of the next phase of the scheme commencing 1 July 2010. The paper is available on the Department's website at: http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/diagim-accred4, and the DOHA welcomes feedback from stakeholders. If you have any strong views, please email carolinehong@asum.com.au
Department of Health and Ageing - Diagnostic Imaging Quality Practice Program

ASUM received some enquiries about the Diagnostic Imaging Quality Practice Program from members. The information can be found on http://www.health.gov.au/internet/main/publishing.nsf/Content/diqpp08.htm

ASUM members can also contact Tom Watson of DOHA on (02) 62895646 or email thomas.watson@health.gov.au

Practices will be given six months to apply for funding under the Program. The closing date for the Program is 25 May 2009.

All practices with a Location Specific Practice Number (LSPN – the registration number used by Medicare Australia to register diagnostic imaging equipment) are eligible for a grant if they:

    •          provided radiology and/or nuclear medicine services in 2007-08; and,
    •          continue to provide those services (by participating in the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme or providing only nuclear medicine services or have an intention to participate in the Diagnostic Imaging Accreditation Scheme in order to continue to provide radiology services);

The Department will offer grants to practices based on the number of radiology and/or nuclear medicine services provided in 2007-08 and which have been processed by Medicare Australia before 30 September 2008. Radiology services will be calculated separately from nuclear medicine services. This means that practices may be eligible for two grants; one grant calculated on the number of radiology services provided and, if applicable, another grant calculated on the number of nuclear medicine services. Eligible practices have been advised of their grant amount.

If you have any questions on the program or did not receive a letter please contact the Diagnostic Imaging Section of the Department of Health and Ageing on (02) 62891966 or email DIQPP@health.gov.au.

Sponsor a Registration for the
WFUMB 2009 Sydney World Medical Congress:
Make a difference in someone’s professional life forever!
ASUM call on members and friends of ASUM to consider donating one or more registration fees for young doctors or sonographers to attend the WFUMB 2009 Sydney medical ultrasound congress. By way of example, one ASUM member doctor has approached me and already donated money of $1500 each, a total of $4500, to fund three registrations for doctors in Vietnam to attend the congress. Imagine the immediate impact that this will make in the attendee’s professional life. Your donation can go a long way to making a real difference in the life of a sonographer or a doctor who otherwise may have great difficulties in attending the WFUMB 2009 congress. I attended my first professional congress as a final year student on a scholarship and can remember the impact it had on me of that generosity. Please email carolinehong@asum.com.au if you wish to help and if you require more information.
How to use your CPD funds to pay for your
WFUMB 2009 Sydney Congress registration fees
Many sonographers and doctors have CPD ( continuing professional development) funds or education trust funds in their employment contracts or agreement. Please consider using those funds to help you pay for your registration fees to attend the WFUMB 2009 Sydney congress. If you wish to have a special letter of invitation to facilitate the approval process from your department, hospital or employer, please email carolinehong@asum.com.au . If you are a manager and a department head, please act generously and approve as many of your staff to attend this important and exciting event which will change the lives of the attendees forever. The information gained from the lectures and workshops, together with the exposure to all the latest advances in technology and international network of luminaries and experts, will leave an indelible imprint in the minds of all attendees for many years to come. It will motivate you, enthuse you and make you feel a real sense of the global ultrasound professional community.
Ways to apply for leave to attend the
WFUMB 2009 Sydney Congress:

The dates for the WFUMB 2009 Sydney congress start from Sunday 30 August to Thursday 3 September 2009. There are many options to apply for leave and to take time off to attend. You can choose One Day, Three Days or Five Days registration. If you are an ASUM member and also enrolled in the Three Day or Five Day registrations, you are eligible to register for additional hands on workshops for an additional $22 each. This is only available to ASUM members living in Australia and NZ. Please consider and plan ahead and you may even consider asking your employer to give you time off by working on the weekend prior to bank up your time to attend this once in a life time opportunity of a WORLD congress at your doorsteps. Some practices are even considering closing for the whole duration of the WFUMB 2009 congress so that all the staff can attend this major event.

If you have to choose only One ultrasound educational event in 2009, the WFUMB 2009 Sydney Congress is a “Must Attend” event. Missing this event is akin to missing the Sydney Olympics when you live in Sydney or Australia and NZ. So, please start planning and talking to your employers now to allow you to take time off to attend this amazing high energy and most exciting medical ultrasound congress ever to come to Sydney! If you need a letter of support to your employer, please email carolienhong@asum.com.au
