for Point of Care Limited Ultrasound Examination

(CCPU)

SPECIFICATIONS

The Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound is awarded by the Council of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to appropriately qualified medical graduates of good standing. A candidate for the Certificate must:

    • be a registered medical practitioner practicing in an approved specialty area or clinical discipline as prescribed by the ASUM Council and listed in an appendix to these regulations. Fellows and Registrars in other specialist disciplines may be admitted at the discretion of the CCPU Certification Board; and

    • be practicing in an relevant specialty or be appointed as a Registrar in their 2nd or subsequent year of an approved training position in a relevant specialty; and

    • fulfill the requirements specified for the Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound and submit a logbook,
      as described in the specifications, demonstrating completion of requirements.

To obtain the Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound, a clinician must be a Fellow of the ACEM, RACS or RANZCOG, or be a Registrar in the 2nd or subsequent year of their training program, and:

    • Complete a recognised course in Physical Principles and Instrumentation. These include ASUM's online program and the DMU/DDU Preparation and Update courses run periodically by ASUM. Other courses may be recognised;

    • Complete the basic module;

    • Complete one advanced module;

    • Complete the Annual Practice Requirements over a minimum 5 year period including a
      minimum of 3 years from completion of the second advanced module;

    • Maintain a logbook demonstrating completion of these requirements. The logbook must include evidence of satisfactory completion of training sessions and evidence that at least half of the cases (including all clinically-indicated cases) have been signed off by a qualified (DDU, FRANZCR, CCPU) clinician;

    • Successfully complete a prescribed practical assessment, conducted by a qualified (DDU, FRANZCR, CCPU) clinician, to demonstrate competence in obtaining and interpreting
      appropriate images;

    • Annual requirement post-certification: Complete 10 points in categories 1 and/or 2 annually in ASUM's MOSIPP Program

Basic Modules

Complete an approved course in Applied Physics and Instrumentation of Diagnostic Ultrasound

FAST/AAA FAST/AAA 1st trimester ultrasound;
2nd & 3rd trimester biometry; placenta; amniotic fluid; normal pelvis, endometrial thickness.

Annual Practice Requirement

Candidates will submit a logbook demonstrating that they have met these requirements

Where it is not possible for clinicians to meet these practice requirements they must attend a recognised annual refresher course

Complete 25 FAST examinations each year, ½ clinically indicated (at least 5 positive) with their findings validated by another study and documented with hard copy of relevant images Complete 25 FAST examinations each year, ½ clinically indicated (at least 5 positive) with their findings validated by another study and documented with hard copy of relevant images

Complete 50 first trimester examinations 20 second trimester examinations and 20 third trimester examinations each year.

Document all findings in a logbook with hard copy of relevant images.
Logbooks will be either
signed off by a qualified (DDU, FRANZCR, COGU or CCPU) clinician, or be sent to the ASUM CCPU Committee for assessment.

Annual Practice Requirement

 

Complete 25 examinations each year in each of the advanced modalities: ½ clinically indicated (at least 5 positive) with their findings validated by another study and documented with hard copy of relevant images.

Where it is not possible for clinicians to meet these practice requirements they must attend a recognised annual refresher course .

Practical Assessment

Submit logbook for Assessment

Successfully complete a practical assessment conducted by a qualified (DDU, FRANZCR, CCPU) clinician or attend an exit workshop conducted by ASUM or ACEM

Recertification: Award of CCPU Certificate endorsed with Advanced Modalities
Annual CME/CPD Requirement
Annual requirement post-certification: Complete 10 points in categories 1 and/or 2 annually in ASUM's MOSIPP Program
