About the CCPU

The Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound is awarded by the Council of the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) on the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, to appropriately qualified medical graduates of good standing. A candidate for the Certificate must:

  • be a registered medical practitioner practicing in an approved specialty area or clinical discipline as prescribed by the ASUM Council and listed in an appendix to these regulations. Fellows and Registrars in other specialist disciplines may be admitted at the discretion of the CCPU Certification Board; and

  • be practicing in an relevant specialty or be appointed as a Registrar in their 2nd or subsequent year of an approved training position in a relevant specialty; and

  • fulfill the requirements specified for the Certificate in Clinical Ultrasound and submit a logbook,
    as described in the specifications, demonstrating completion of requirements.

To obtain the Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound, a clinician must be a Fellow of his/her relevant College, or be a Registrar in the 2nd or subsequent year of their training program, and:

  • Complete a recognised course in Physical Principles and Instrumentation. These include ASUM's online program and the DMU/DDU Preparation and Update courses run periodically by ASUM. Other courses may be recognised;

  • Complete the basic module;

  • Complete one advanced module;

  • Complete the Annual Practice Requirements over a minimum 5 year period including a
    minimum of 3 years from completion of the second advanced module;

  • Maintain a logbook demonstrating completion of these requirements. The logbook must include evidence of satisfactory completion of training sessions and evidence that at least half of the cases (including all clinically-indicated cases) have been signed off by a qualified (DDU, FRANZCR, CCPU) clinician;

  • Successfully complete a prescribed practical assessment, conducted by a qualified (DDU, FRANZCR, CCPU) clinician, to demonstrate competence in obtaining and interpreting
    appropriate images;

  • Annual requirement post-certification: Complete 10 points in categories 1 and/or 2 annually in ASUM's MOSIPP Program
