Duplex scanning has replaced venography as the preferred technique for anatomical assessment of venous disease. Various invasive and non-invasive physiological tests have been used to measure pressure and volume changes and the favoured technique now is air plethysmography. These have helped to clarify the nature and natural history of acute deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and chronic venous disease (CVD).
