Equipment Upgrades: Do we get Value for Money?

As everyone involved in the purchase and maintenance of medium and high end medical ultrasound equipment is aware you can spend a lot of money on upgrades over the working life of the equipment. Local experience over the past decade is that the total dollar value of all the upgrades offered for a high end machine will be comparable to the original purchase price. Is the significant expense of continuous upgrades good value of are they a money making enterprise on the part of the manufacturers?
