Choosing a New Ultrasound Scanner

John P Woodcock PhD OBE
Department of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering, University Hospital of Wales,Cardiff, UK

Choosing a new ultrasound scanner is one of the more pleasant tasks in an otherwise hectic life of scanning and reporting. However, because of the choice available with modern, high resolution equipment, it is quite a complex problem. The whole process can be made easier by asking a number of simple questions.

Final Choice
There is no easy way to choose your new scanner. You must go through the check list outlined above. Talk with colleagues who have different equipment and ask them about any particular problems to look out for. If, as a result of all of this advice, you are down to your last two scanners and you cannot decide then try flipping a coin.
