MOSIPP DATA ENTRY
Data entered after 31 December may not be included in your annual profile or in our return to ASAR.
Members who are using MOSIPP should record their 2006 data before 1 January 2007. The MOSIPP year runs from 1 January to 31 December. MOSIPP certificates will be issued in late January after all outstanding data has been entered.

DMU ENROLMENT
The 2007 DMU enrolment forms and handbooks are available online www.asum.com.au
Enrolment is due by 31 January 2007. Late enrolment deadline is 31 March 2007.

UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR ALL ASUM MEMBERS
Members will be aware that ASUM is hosting the 2009 WFUMB (World Federation of Ultrasound in Medicine and Biology) World Congress in Sydney from August 30 to September 2 2009. The WFS (World Federation of Songraphers) Congress will be held in conjunction.
Organisation is well under way with the Congress Convenor, Dr Stan Barnett and Scientific Convenor, Associate Professor Roger Davies.
The WFUMB World Congress is held every three years and generally attracts up to 5000 registrants. The Ultrasound Community of Australia and New Zealand is privileged to have the premier world ultrasound congress in its region.
 ASUM is encouraging as many members as possible to participate in what will be a unique opportunity to be a part of ultrasound history in Australasia.

ASUM seeks member volunteer for DMU (Asia) Academic Sonographer from one to three months attachment at Vision College
Vision College invites suitable candidates to take up the Academic Sonographer position in Malaysia.
Note that 2007 is Visit Malaysia Year and there are many activities in store for the interested candidate.

Academic Sonographer ASUM volunteer work from One Month to Three Months Attachment
·         Possesses DMU (General) from ASUM or an equivalent qualification
·         Supervise clinical training on DMU (Asia) students. Working in a team with several DMU (Asia) Sonographers
·         Lecturing on DMU (General) topics
·         Conduct assessments including Problem-based learning, Weekly Assessments, Assignments, etc
·         All materials have been prepared including lectures, PBLs, Weekly Assessments, Assignments and other assessments with answer sheet
·         RM5,000 per month as living allowance ($1AUD approximately Ringgit Malaysia RM 2.8)
·         Return flight from Australia/New Zealand
·         Accommodation with transportation during attachment
·         A host of social activities and getting to know Malaysia, Truly Asia initiatives. This can involve visiting some historic places and meeting up with various segment of the medical fraternity

Doctor (self funded) from China requests clinical research placement for a period of 3 to 6 monthsDoctor from China requests a placement for a period of 3 to 6 months beginning March or April 2007 to learn about differential diagnosis and interventional therapy of tumours in superficial organs, especially in the breast lesion. Dr Tan Xuyan is working as the chief doctor of ultrasound, director of the ultrasound department in Jiangsu Tumour Hospital in the city of Nanjing, People’s Republic of China in the areas of tumour diagnosis and therapy, as well as contrast enhanced sonography. Mr Stephen Bird has been appointed Teaching Fellow for Sydney and Perth.  Stephen will be visiting Sydney on Saturday 4 November for an Educational Meeting hosted by Robyn Tantau at St Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst.  All enquiries must be directed to the ASUM office; St Vincent’s Hospital is unable to take enquiries concerning this meeting. Stephen will be visiting Perth in February 2007 for a Teaching Clinic and Educational Meeting. 

Stephen works with a diverse case mix, but enjoys a special interest in musculoskeletal ultrasound.  He has been a speaker at many national conferences and recently received a bronze award at the 2006 Seoul WFUMB Congress for his work on ultrasound imaging of the biceps brachii insertion.  He is currently employed as the Charge Sonographer at Benson Radiology in Adelaide.  Stephen began sonography in 1990, holds a General and a Vascular DMU and a Master of Medical Sonography from the University of South Australia.  He is currently a member of the ASUM Federal Council and Chairman of the ASUM DMU Board of Examiners.  Previously he has been Chairman of the ASAR, an ASA Federal Council member and recipient of the 2002 ASA Sonographer Achievement Award

BERESFORD BUTTERY TEACHING FELLOWSHIP

Teaching Fellow Associate Professor Albert Lam

Associate Professor Albert Lam has been appointed Teaching Fellow for 2006 to New Zealand.  Albert will be visiting Auckland and Dunedin for Teaching Clinics and Educational Meetings in November 2006.

After qualifying as a Radiologist, Albert sub-specialised in paediatric radiology and trained in ultrasound with Drs Gary Gates, Fred Sample and George Leopold in California in the mid 1970s. He returned to Australia to establish the first paediatric ultrasound unit in NSW in 1979.  He has remained as the head of this pioneering ultrasound unit at the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Children ever since.

Albert was appointed Clinical Associate Professor in both the Departments of Paediatrics and Radiology at the University of Sydney in 1994 and is also concurrently the Deputy Head of Radiology at the University.

Albert joined ASUM as a member in 1979 and was elected Honorary Fellow in 2004.  He continues to work closely with ASUM and served as ASUM’s NSW Branch Chairman from 1991 to 1994, as well as being the DDU Examiner for paediatric.  He convenes and lectures at numerous education seminars and scientific meetings organised by ASUM and was the inaugural presenter of the UI/UL Plenary Lecture at the ASUM Gold Coast Meeting in 2002.  Albert has been an invited lecturer at no less than 32 international meetings and 29 Australasian meetings.

                           KATHRYN BUSCH WINS PRESTIGIOUS AWARD

Congratulations to ASUM member Kathryn Busch from Camperdown Vascular Laboratory who won the 2006 Dr D. E. Strandness Research Award at the Society for Vascular Ultrasound Meeting, Philadelphia USA in June 2006.  Kathryn’s presentation was on High resolution duplex ultrasound imaging proves a high incidence of arterial neovascularisation.

This is the most prestigious research award of that society and recognised hers as the best scientific paper at the meeting.

DENMARK SCHOLAR SEEKS MSK ULTRASOUND PLACEMENT IN AUSTRALIA

CADUCEUS scholarship recipient from Denmark seeks placement in MSK ultrasound training in Sydney or Melbourne for approximately 6-8 weeks from mid November 2006.

The recipient is on his way to becoming an Orthopaedic Sports Surgeon.  He is currently writing his PhD under the guidance of Dr. Soren Torp-Pedersen on the diagnosis and treatment of Achilles tendinopathies.  He uses ultrasound several hours a day mainly for diagnosing tendon injuries.  He is also the Doctor of the largest soccer club in Demark (F.C. Copenhagen).

SOMETHING NEW FOR 2006 - PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPETITION
A Photographic Competition has been organised by ASUM and the 2006 Local Organising Committee.  Individuals are invited to submit up to 3 photographs for each of the 2 prize categories.

1. General Interest Photograph
The 2006 Local Organising Committee is looking for all budding photographers to send  in their favourite photographic work.  This might be an artistic photo, a holiday snap or portraits of people.  There are no specific themes for this category.

2. Historical Photograph Ultrasound
Prizes will be awarded to the best historical photograph of ultrasound under the following 3 categories:
1. Interest
2. Technology
3. Occasion

CADUCEUS LAUNCHED IN COPENHAGEN

CADUCEUS – “Collaborative Australasian Danish Undertaking for Continuing Excellence in UltraSound “ was formally launched in Copenhagen on 14 June 2006 at the Herlev Hospital at the Prof Hans Henrik Holm Honorary Session of the 9th International Congress on Interventional Ultrasound, under the patronage of HRH The Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Dr Christian Nolsoe, President of the Danish Society for Diagnostic Ultrasound and the Scientific Convenor of ICIUS also presented the CADUCEUS prize of 50,000 Kr to Prof Holm.  

 More information will be announced in the ASUM Ultrasound Bulletin about the ASUM CADUCEUS scholarship which will be made available to partially fund a short stay of 2-4 weeks in Denmark for ultrasound training and work experience.
