We'd like to try and clear up some misunderstandings about the Neonatal CCPU which seem to have emerged from the announcement email that was circulated last week. The process is most clearly explained in the first of the linked documents: Several points to highlight: 1) Firstly, the workshop on the 8th/9th August is not compulsory but aimed at those who are starting out on the process of learning ultrasound and accreditation to give them a foundation in which they can build. We are planning to run a more advanced course in late November this year, this is in the early planning phase. 2) For those with some prior learning in this area, they need to apply, as instructed, to have that prior learning recognised. http://www.asum.com.au/open/CCPU_Neonatal_AdvStand.htm They need to include as much supporting documentation of competence as they can with their application. They can propose what they would like to have recognised from the basic module right up to full award of the neonatal CCPU. To ensure application at the appropriate level, those applying for prior learning recognition should also look at the specifications for the full CCPU at http://www.asum.com.au/open/CCPU_regs&specs.pdf as well as the syllabus http://www.asum.com.au/open/CCPU_Neonatal_syllabus.html The final decision on these applications will be made by the CCPU committee. 3) For those starting out it will become necessary to either attend one of the courses that will be run via ASUM or to attend another accredited course. The other courses can include those that have been run by Jon Skinner in Auckland or an in-house training course run within a hospital department. Several of us who train in ultrasound, including Jon Skinner, are applying to ASUM to have our courses recognised. If your department runs such a course, you should do the same. This is a new process and there's going to be a learning curve for all of us, so we beg your patience. We welcome constructive feedback on this and any queries could be directed to Nick Evans (nevans@med.usyd.edu.au), Martin Kluckow (mkluckow@med.usyd.edu.au) or Andy Gill (Andy.Gill@health.wa.gov.au). CCPU NEONATAL WORKSHOP CCPU Neonatal Workshop Registration Brochure: We are excited to be launching the CCPU (Neonatal) as a qualification for Neonatologist who uses ultrasound to assist in diagnosis at the point of care. The CCPU has been established as a qualification recognisable across a range of disciplines, as a suitable credentialing process for doctors, who are not imaging specialists, to perform limited, targeted examination at the point of care. Performance and use of ultrasound by clinicians at point of care to guide acute clinical care is now common place. The previous restricted use of ultrasound by radiologists and sonologists has changed with time as ultrasound machines become more readily available and the utility of the physiological and diagnostic information provided by ultrasound increases. As a result, many clinicians are now informally using ultrasound in day to day clinical practice, often without recognized training, accreditation and ongoing audit. The Certificate in Clinician Performed Ultrasound (CCPU) is offered by the Australasian Society for Ultrasound in Medicine (ASUM) as a credential for medical practitioners who are not imaging specialists but who may use ultrasound as a diagnostic tool at the point of care. The CCPU is awarded by the ASUM Council on the recommendation of the ASUM CCPU Certification Board. Please follow the link to see the related documents:
ASUM is offering free affiliate membership till 30th June 2009. This entitles you to ASUM member rates when joining into the CCPU. This is an opportunity that you would not want to miss and is a one off promotion. Please email acceptance of this offer to Kaly Tran ccpu@asum.com.au before 30 June 2008 to qualify. Of course, you are also eligible to join at a higher status of membership by paying full membership fee of $AU 349.80 GST incl.
