The ASUM Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (DMU) is an internationally accepted, graduate entry, professional qualification in ultrasonography. The DMU is a self-paced course, whereby candidates prepare for a range of assessments in their own time using a variety of learning materials.

ASUM currently offers the following four DMUs:

DMU (Cardiac)

DMU (General)

DMU (Obstetric)

DMU (Vascular)

Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (Cardiac)

Aim:

The aim of the DMU (Cardiac) is to provide a high quality education program that will equip you with the best possible knowledge, skills and attributes to become a competent, accredited cardiac sonographer.

Part 1 Objectives

On completion of this program of study you will have:

Demonstrated your knowledge of Physical Principles of Ultrasound and Instrumentation by completing a written assessment successfully.
Demonstrated your knowledge of Anatomy, Embryology, Physiology and Pathology (APP) by completing a written assessment successfully.

Part 2 Objectives

On completion of Part 2 of this program you will have demonstrated that you are able to perform independently as a sonographer by undertaking and successfully completing all of the DMU (Cardiac) requirements.

Your cumulative knowledge and skills will be assessed as you progress through Part 2 and undertake the Written Assessments, Case-based Discussions, Mini CEX and Case-based Assignments, Clinical Supervisor Assessments and Logbook.

DMU (Cardiac) Structure

The DMU (Cardiac) is divided into two parts, Part 1 and Part 2.

Part 1:
You will study Part 1 using a wide range of learning materials, working in your own time and at your own pace. You will be studying:

Physical Principles of Ultrasound and Instrumentation
Anatomy, Embryology, Physiology and Cardiac Pathology

On completion of Part 1 there are two (2) summative assessments. The physics assessment requires you to answer 120 multiple choice questions and the APP requires 60 multiple choice questions and 10 short answer questions to be answered. Both assessments are two (2) hours. You will need to pass both of these to progress to Part 2.

Part 2:
You must be working in a relevant, clinical area so that you are able to combine theoretical knowledge with the development of competent practical, clinical skills. The range of assessments carried out aims to assess the breadth of learning being undertaken.

The formative assessments are:

Five (5) Case-based Assignments
Five (5) Supervisor Assessments
A Logbook with two thousand (2,000) specified scans completed
A Mini CEX where two (2) assessors will assess you in your workplace while you scan three (3) patients
Case-based Discussion where you will be assessed on both physics and clinical knowledge

There are two (2) summative written assessments of two (2) hours each:

Sixty (60) multiple choice questions and fifteen (15) short answer questions
Three (3) out of four (4) long answer questions, one (1) of which is compulsory

Diploma of Medical Ultrasonography (General)

Aim:

The aim of the DMU (General) is to provide a high quality education program that will equip you with the best possible knowledge, skills and attributes to become a competent, accredited general sonographer.

Part 1 Objectives

On completion of this program of study you will have:

Demonstrated your knowledge of Physical Principles of Ultrasound and Instrumentation by completing a written assessment successfully.
Demonstrated your knowledge of Anatomy, Embryology, Physiology and Pathology (APP) by completing a written assessment successfully.

Part 2 Objectives

On completion of Part 2 of this program you will have demonstrated that you are able to perform independently as a sonographer by undertaking and successfully completing all of the DMU (General) requirements.
